James Bond’s dynamic vices

Historically, James Bond’s bad habits have mainly centered around promiscuity, alcohol and gambling, but over the years each has ebbed and flowed. For instance, during the Craig era, his long-term relationships with Vesper Lynd and Madeleine Swann have noticeably curbed his womanizing, giving him less of the revolving-door approach to romance seen in earlier Bond movies. His drinking, however, appears to have gone in the opposite direction, with Craig’s Bond indulging in a few particularly memorable benders (even with pain pills) that make the casual drinking of previous Bonds look almost responsible. Gambling, meanwhile, never seemed to be much more than a hobby, with the most prominent instance the Casino Royale poker tournament which functioned primarily as a mission objective rather than an enjoyable activity.

I’d like to see Bond’s vices become more prominent again, particularly if his compulsive behavior starts to interfere with his personal life or professional judgment and gives him something meaningful to overcome. A Bond who drinks too much, gambles too freely and occasionally makes questionable decisions could make his vices feel like genuine character flaws rather than pitfalls of his occupation.

At least 007 has finally kicked his tobacco habit for good.

Pun intended.  In Moonraker, Bond’s “why not?” in agreement to Goodhead’s space centrifuge training recommendation was one of Moore’s Bond’s dumbest decisions. Why not?!  Maybe because you’ve got a target on your back as a secret agent that infiltrates a megalomaniac’s space program?  Or, you know, you could get really sick from the g-forces?  Or…

it’s another simple, missed marketing opportunity…similar to not having a James Bond “007” movie released in 2007.  I’m hoping the Amazon movies are released more frequently!
