Lines like this are par for the course when it comes to the occasionally odd dialogue in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. In this case, Bond seduces Ruby Bartlett and somehow finds himself captivated by her lipstick, of all things.
The movie itself is fantastic and remains one of my favorites, but George Lazenby’s first outing as Bond certainly comes with some growing pains. I’d argue Lazenby is the snobbiest of all the Bonds, with his aristocratic vocabulary and elaborate turns of phrase sometimes feeling too refined even for 007. Referring to lipstick as an “inspiration” seems a bit grandiose, doesn’t it?
But that’s Lazenby’s Bond, so perhaps it’s fitting that he seems almost enamored with the sound of his own voice. I’ll give Lazenby credit, though, for the sheer confidence with which he delivers even the most pompous of lines.
