Character Spotlight: Anatole Taubman as Elvis

Among Quantum Of Solace‘s flaws, Dominic Greene’s henchman Elvis certainly earns a place on my list, largely because I’m still not sure what the character is supposed to bring to the movie. Rather than making Greene more intimidating, Elvis often feels like a distraction, beginning with his unfortunate appearance and that bowl-shaped hairpiece that looks as though it is actively plotting its escape from his head.

If I had to describe Elvis in one word, it would be “bumbling,” as he perpetually seems one step behind both his boss and James Bond. Even Agent Strawberry Fields gets in on the act, tripping Elvis as he follows Bond and Camille down an absurdly long flight of stone stairs, in what I consider an overly childish and unnecessary bit of slapstick. The gag succeeds in sending Elvis’ hairpiece flying, although considering the extent of the tumble, Elvis’ neck brace seems far fetched (I’d expect at least a broken arm or leg from the fall).

For a villain as polished and calculating as Dominic Greene, I think a ruthless, disciplined henchman in the mold of Stamper from Tomorrow Never Dies would’ve been far more effective than this particular Elvis impersonation. He’s definitely a henchman “miss.”

If the agreement was really that fragile, it probably wasn’t going to happen anyway. Still, Camille’s…

Quite the random line from On Her Majesty’s Secret Service…why did they have M suddenly have a butterfly collection hobby?  Surely a writer lost a bet and insisted having “lepidoptery” in the script…?

Not sure I agree with the sentiment to this lyric from The Living Daylights (Isn’t a more positive message “dying’s in the way we live?”).  I guess I don’t like either to be honest… Regardless, I will give this Bond movie the award for best appearance of the movie title in dialogue: “Whoever she was,…
