Spectre (2015)

Can’t you see I’m grieving?

In Spectre, Bond’s interactions with Lucia Sciarra never quite land for me. After killing her husband Marco during the Mexico City helicopter sequence, Bond arrives at his funeral and immediately assumes Lucia will welcome his attention. Somehow, he’s right, but the entire setup feels more uncomfortable than charming. Lucia’s above line is one of the few moments where she pushes back, calling out Bond’s attempt to step into her life while she is vulnerable, and really it made me think, “Jeez Bond, maybe you should give her some space.”

I’m also conflicted about their encounter after Bond saves her from the assassins at her home, with the scene feeling a little too contrived in how Bond gains vital Spectre information through a relationship that developed almost instantly. Also, does Lucia just casually call the police about the two dead bodies in her yard? Surely the Carabinieri would want to question the shooter?

I was happy to finally see Monica Bellucci as a Bond girl, but I think she’d have been better served in a more prominent and less somber role.
