Time and again I predictably return to Goldfinger as one of my favorite James Bond movies, and for good reason. The plot, the characters and the perfectly fleshed-out James Bond formula shine all the way through. But the golf sequence can sometimes be criminally overlooked.
Bond’s informal round of golf with Goldfinger is setup with Her Majesty’s backing with Bond fronted the Nazi gold bar as collateral. Not only is it endorsed by Bond’s superiors, it manages to serve as a surprising vehicle to move the plot forward and tactfully showcase different entertaining cinematic elements. This includes humorous moments, memorable lines, genuine moments of tension, Bond thinking on his feet, and Bond running circles around the villain at his own game.
Who knew James Bond would thrive on the golf course?
