I’m on top of the situation

In Diamonds Are Forever, Bond coyly reassures Tiffany Case that he’ll handle the fallout from her role in the diamond smuggling operation. It’s a classic Bond double entendre since Bond is literally on top her in bed and an amusing one at that, but it also feels slightly manufactured. Like several moments in the film’s unapologetically campy second half, this 40 second scene felt rushed and Bond and Tiffany Case’s partnership felt like an afterthought. Which tracks for the movie as a whole, since Bond’s relationships in Diamonds never really developed and were more surface-level rather than meaningful.

The difference may be semantic, but it matters. James Bond doesn’t need a reinvention, he needs a refresh. The 007 character, the Bond movie formula, and the traditions that have sustained the series for more than 60 years are not problematic. Bond should still be Bond. Keep his history, his flaws, his vices, his gambling,…

They should have kept the acronym usage for the Spectre movie – Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge, and Extortion…it wouldn’t have caused any harm and would have been a nice nod to nostalgia.  Plus it would have been cool to see it stylized as S.P.E.C.T.R.E.
