Dr. No’s faceless and harrowing interrogation of Professor Dent has aged remarkably well. Although an unseen interrogator sounds gimmicky, it was masterfully executed thanks to the combination of Dr. No’s bellowing, monotone yet confident voice and Professor Dent’s fear and skepticism. Dr. No’s constant badgering like with the line above made any potential repercussions a scary prospect for Dent. And although the tarantula-as-a-killer scenario seemed far fetched, the prospect of a spider as a real threat to Bond was undeniable.

The scene is a reminder that villains don’t even need a physical presence to be effective. Dr. No intimidates with ease and dominates the scene despite never appearing on screen. It’s a strong, early example of a Bond movie’s suspense dictated by dialogue and not an action sequence.
