k.d. lang’s Surrender from Tomorrow Never Dies remains one of my favorite non-theme Bond songs. I’ve always interpreted this lyric, along with the one that follows, “You’ll relish the world that I create,” through the perspective of Elliot Carver and his obsession with power through manufactured events and manipulated headlines. The word “whatever” is especially important because it suggests limitless possibilities in how Carver operates, whether to exert his influence, exploit an opportunity, or to make deals that ultimately benefit him. It perfectly reflects Carver’s deeply Machiavellian mindset and his obsession with power.
