On a few occasions, Bond and Dr. Christmas Jones’s characters lean a little too far into the nuclear physics side of her occupation in The World Is Not Enough. Renard’s demise, for instance, leans too heavily on circumstantial elements of a nuclear weapon that conveniently turn deadly. All the while, Bond suddenly handles a plutonium rod and its insertion like a seasoned physicist. Then, Renard can’t take a hint that he’s in danger and refuses to move, despite Bond’s clear indication that something’s coming. Renard’s death feels less like a clever kill and more like an unsatisfying accident in search of plausibility.
