This line from Moonraker stands as one of James Bond’s more strained forced quips. It arrives after a lengthy and brutal fight between Bond and a ninja at one of Drax’s labs, culminating in a surprisingly brutal death as the assailant falls from a clock tower into a piano during a band’s performance. The line is a direct cultural nod to the famous Casablanca misquote, but it’s levity doesn’t quite match the tension of the previous moment.
If anything, the quote undercuts the buildup of suspense of the previous sequence and feels out of place. It’s one of those moments where the Bond writers felt a little too cute and tried a little too hard. With Roger Moore’s Bond, it seems to happen frequently because of his penchant for clever lines and humor above all other Bond actors.
