The Man With The Golden Gun (1974)

Bangkok traffic’s worse than Piccadilly

This line perfectly sets the tone for one of the more bizarre sequences in The Man with the Golden Gun. James Bond arrives at a kickboxing match expecting a straightforward exchange with Andrea Anders about his travel gripes, only to find her already dead. What follows is a sequence that seems determined to outdo itself in oddity.

Francisco Scaramanga’s ambush partially collapses when Bond casually retrieves the Solex device from a pile of popcorn on the ground, a detail that feels less like good spy work and more like a stroke of luck. We then get to hear Scaramanga drone on in an overly theatrical monologue about his bizarre origin story, all occurring during a kickboxing match, mind you. And then it ends as quick as it begins when Scaramanga decides he is done and up and leaves. It’s truly a peculiar scene.
