Lorelei’s above cheeky innuendo in Casino Royale (1967) is one of several lines that elicit at a strong “tsss” or “pfft” from me. And that goes a long way for this movie! It’s a great response to Cooper’s suggestion that “beauty is only skin deep” amidst his tour of resisting women’s advances.
There are a lot of scantily clad and surprisingly attractive women in this spoof, and that’s one thing this movie gets right. The cast of Bond girls from Mata Bond to Moneypenny to The Detainer, is undeniably striking, often elevating scenes when the script itself cannot. It’s a glossy distraction that highlights the movie’s core problem that style is present in abundance, but clear purpose is nowhere to be found.
It’s simply another item in a long list of reasons why this movie often falls out of favor with Bond fans, myself included.
