On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)

Just a slight stiffness coming on…

Yeah, due to the altitude no doubt. This innuendo from On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is unapologetically blunt and signals Bond’s sexual confidence in a room full of women while one writes her room number on his inner thigh with lipstick. Set at the dinner table surrounded by women, the line underscores how effortlessly Lazenby’s Bond slides into flirtation. But it borders on crass and clever, and while it fits the franchise’s playfulness, it makes me think of how differently Connery’s Bond would have handled the situation.

I imagine Connery’s subtle charm would have elevated the scene slightly, and his calmer delivery would have as well. Although I’m a fan of Lazenby’s Bond, scenes like this spark that familiar “what if?” that I suspect plenty of people were thinking in the theater watching the first Connery-less James Bond movie.
