Dr. No (1962)

What’s going on behind my back?

In Dr. No, I doubt Miss Taro expected that innocent-sounding question to become such a perfect double entendre once Bond arrived at her home. She had anticipated Bond being killed on the way there, only for 007 to send the pursuing car off to its own funeral instead.

By the time he arrives, Bond is clearly ready to make the most of his unexpected second chance, even telling Taro not to bother getting a towel to dry off on his account. He wastes little time making his intentions clear and reaches behind her to unzip her top, prompting her cute defensive question.

It’s classic womanizing Connery, with even his cheeky “Look. No hands.” response showing just how confidently he presses his advantage. Bond seems to recognize almost immediately that Miss Taro is more naive than dangerous, so even after narrowly escaping an attempted assassination, he’s more interested in pursuing her than grilling her about what happened. Priorities, right?

Solitaire is an interesting Bond girl in Live And Let Die.  Her naivete and innocence, juxtaposed with Bond’s confidence and manipulation make for a unique Bond and Bond girl relationship.  It certainly wasn’t Bond’s proudest romp, especially with his tarot card scam.  Kinda scummy, really.

I just can’t see it happening.  His track record alone bodes well.  I guess if other things out of his control cause big issues – like the next actor chosen as Bond?  But even then, surely he has some input in that choice, right?
