Don’t get me wrong, Ben Whishaw’s Q was an excellent follow-up to the curmudgeon and stubborn Q of old and “R,” Q’s successor in The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day. Although the relationship thrived, and they had a great rapport, there’s still a part of me that makes me feel like Whishaw’s Q character is almost incomplete, through no fault of his own.
Normally, Bond treats a visit to Q Branch with Desmond Llewelyn almost like boot camp, where Q keeps him down to earth and him and Bond almost have a father/son relationship. With Whishaw’s Q, that is missing because of Q’s young age. And Bond calls it out right from the start when he asks if Q still has spots.
No offense to Whishaw, but I’d like to see Q go back to his roots as more of an authority figure to Bond rather than a contemporary.
