It’s no surprise that Clifton James was invited back as Sheriff J.W. Pepper for a rare consecutive appearance after his memorable performance in Live And Let Die. Roger Moore’s easygoing attitude gives Pepper the perfect target to bounce off, even if the sheriff’s larger-than-life comic relief occasionally threatens to steal the scene. His return in The Man With The Golden Gun may be far-fetched, but dropping this loud Louisiana lawman into Thailand on vacation creates plenty of entertaining culture clash with this simpleton.
One of Pepper’s funniest moments comes when Thai police briefly detain him and he loudly threatens to call everyone from the FBI and CIA to diplomat Henry Kissinger himself. The officers couldn’t care less, which makes the outburst even funnier.
