One of the stranger little moments in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service comes when Marc-Ange Draco gives Bond his daughter’s hand in marriage. As Draco wishes Bond luck, he oddly adds the above line and attempts to put an apparent million pound check into Bond’s pocket. Bond refuses the check, but it’s unclear if he does it just on principal or because he never wants to owe Draco anything.
Bond follows it up with a bizarre proverb about a “price” for his wife being above “rubies” and “your million pounds” which just confuses me further. I mean, it’s a wedding gift, Bond, just graciously accept it. Maybe it’s an ego thing? I think Bond comes off as rude here, unfortunately.
