Never Say Never Again (1983)

The Tears of Allah. Sweet, like money.

Although I can appreciate some of Maximilian Largo’s eccentricities in Never Say Never Again, he has some lines like the one above that leave much to be desired. While overlooking the beautiful Tears of Allah site, Largo takes a sip of water (then spits it out) and somehow lands on this comparison.

The line almost suggests Largo sees instant dollar signs in everything around him, though the movie never suggests a nuclear warhead ransom plot is in the cards. There’s many ways to describe money, but “sweet” feels like the sort of adjective only a Bond villain in a non-canon remake would settle on. And with Largo’s oddball charisma in this movie, it tracks.
