The end of the pre-title sequence of The Living Daylights is an underrated showcase of Bond at his most efficient and self-assured. From surviving an explosives-rigged truck plunging off a cliff to steering a flaming parachute onto a yacht, the sequence is as slick as it is inventive. What really sells it, though, is Timothy Dalton’s confidence and charm. As he informs headquarters that he will be “an hour late,” he casually amends it to “two,” punctuating the line with a sly smile as he’s handed a drink by a bikini-clad woman clearly taken with her unexpected guest. It’s a perfect mic-drop moment to kickoff a Bond movie title sequence.
