Dr. No’s curt dismissal of Bond as a “stupid policeman” marks the abrupt end of their polite dinner charade and reinforces the villain’s defining trait of keeping his composure. Even in direct confrontation with his enemy, Dr. No shows no flicker of emotion, delivering his insult with cold indifference before calmly ordering Bond’s beating. The line itself may be plain, but it reflects Dr. No’s emotionally detached worldview. He’s seemingly numb to danger and conflict, and his superiority isn’t just implied, it’s asserted.
It’s one of several instances in the movie that I come back for comparisons to other Bond movies. It really is impressive that the first one got the villain role so right. It’s almost as if the highlights of Dr. No are overlooked and underrated because it’s the first James Bond movie, unfortunately.
