Dr. No (1962)

Right! Up slowly and face that wall.

In Dr. No, Bond’s swift takedown of Pussfeller and Quarrel in the bar is a sharp showcase of his instincts and efficiency, punctuated by this confident command. The moment feels like a clean victory, only to be instantly undercut by Felix Leiter’s gun at Bond’s back, creating a perfectly timed reversal. Fortunately, the tension is quickly relieved when it’s revealed they’re essentially on the same team.

It’s a neat and simple back and forth, but it’s effective cinema. It’s a small exchange, but it captures how tightly constructed Dr. No is as a movie. There’s very few, if any, wasted lines or filler scenes and has great pacing. Dr. No just gets it right!
