Miss Moneypenny, perhaps?

During the bathhouse scene in You Only Live Twice, Tiger Tanaka’s seemingly offhand remark about an English woman willing to attend to Bond feels far more pointed than it appears. Bond’s knowing glance and Tiger’s confident reply above, as well as , “We have our sources,” subtly suggest insider knowledge about Bond’s personal life. Taken together with Bond calling Moneypenny “Penny” for the first (and I think only?) time earlier, the movie hints at a relationship that goes beyond office flirtation.

Throughout the movie, Moneypenny’s behavior reinforces this impression with her usual openly affectionate and playfully jealous interactions with Bond, but especially so when she delivers the “I love you” password with a sincerity that seems to transcend professional duty. While the Bond series typically treats their chemistry as unfulfilled banter, You Only Live Twice feels like an exception. It almost invites us to read their relationship as something that may have already crossed the line off-screen…
