Dr. No (1962)

I never fail, Mr. Bond.

This deceptively simple line from Dr. No encapsulates everything that makes the character so compelling. Far from bluster, it reflects a villain defined by confidence and no unnecessary bravado. It’s just the calm assurance of a man who believes in his superiority. In an underrated performance, Joseph Wiseman elevates that confidence through his calm voice and levelheadedness, even in times of escalated tension.

In many ways, (and really, not surprisingly) later villains borrow a page or two of confidence from Dr. No. He reminds me of Hugo Drax, who’s a bit more outwardly confident, and Auric Goldfinger, but less arrogant, with a similar ego to Karl Stromberg. It’s no surprise that his quiet, unwavering self-belief set a great template for future Bond villains to follow.
