Never Say Never Again (1983)

Yes, but my martini is still dry

Aside from this admittedly sharp line in Never Say Never Again, the introductory encounter between Fatima Blush and James Bond veers into unmistakably cringe territory.  The scene asks the audience to accept that two people can forge a meaningful flirtation while skimming across the water on a high-speed ski run.  It’s a premise so implausible it borders on parody.

Compounding the awkwardness is Bond’s conspicuous avoidance of his iconic “Bond, James Bond” introduction (almost certainly due to contractual limitations), which leaves his dialogue feeling oddly defanged.  What follows is a cascade of clumsy innuendos, as if Bond were improvising lines he hadn’t actually rehearsed and Fatima declaring that she does “many things very well” and knows “the best waters” for whatever he might be “fishing” for land with a thud.

The innuendos seem to overstay their welcome, and although they’re humorous, their absurdity overshadows anything beneficial to the movie.
