This quick quip from henchman Gupta in Tomorrow Never Dies is a fitting snapshot of his role within Elliott Carver’s Tomorrow organization. Destruction is essentially Carver’s business model, whether that means bringing down a passing aircraft or destroying a world leader’s reputation with fabricated headlines. Gupta, however, feels less like a traditional henchman and more like a glorified minion with access to some very dangerous buttons. He dutifully follows orders without seeming particularly interested in the consequences of what those orders actually mean.

That makes his casual “ready to rock and ruin” remark all the more disturbing, considering he’s triggering an international crisis. Gupta is clearly a follower rather than a leader, and his complete lack of moral hesitation makes him an especially useful cog in Carver’s machine. Apparently, for Gupta launching a potential global catastrophe is just another day at the office.
