Amongst the many highlights of my favorite Pierce Brosnan Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies, is Bond and Wai Lin’s handcuffed motorcycle escape. It was a clever decision to put the pair on a BMW motorcycle rather than in a car, which instantly turns a familiar car chase into something far more inventive. That’s because Bond and Wai Lin’s unfortunate physical connection forces them to coordinate in ways that are equal parts difficult and awkward. Including when Wai Lin ingeniously straddles Bond to help him drive, adding a perfect flash of humor and sexual innuendo to a chase scene (is that a first?!). I just can’t imagine trying to work the clutch!

And although each of Bond’s subsequent decisions during the chase are more risky with more implausible outcomes than the previous, the chase is perfectly over-the-top James Bond. It’s also very satisfying to see Bond prevail against a helicopter with a clothesline, of all things.
