John Barry’s incredible score does a lot of the heavy lifting during Thunderball‘s epic underwater battle. Strip the music away, and the scene becomes strangely eerie. Aside from the occasional muffled sound, it has to be mostly silent as divers spear each other and desperately fight for position. But even with the soundtrack, it seems odd there is no extensive yelling or constant audible noises as divers fight. It must have been an enormous challenge to film, with every underwater movement and stunt requiring careful coordination. The finished result is still one of the movie’s most ambitious scenes and an all-time epic sequence.
