But you are SO! WRONG!

In Casino Royale, Mads Mikkelsen brings an incredible intensity to Le Chiffre that ages like a fine wine. This exclamation during Bond’s torture has always been one of my favorite moments of his performance. As Bond calmly points out that Le Chiffre’s own people will kill him whether he talks or not, the confidence he projected at the start of the scene begins to unravel. His furious response feels less like confidence and more like someone trying to drown out an uncomfortable truth. By the time he desperately pleads with Mr. White for more time to recover the money, the fear in Le Chiffre’s voice confirms Bond’s pronouncements hit a nerve.

In effect, Bond briefly gains the psychological upper hand despite being completely at Le Chiffre’s physical mercy. It’s a subtle but brilliant reminder that Le Chiffre is ultimately just as trapped as 007 tied to the chair.
