In Spectre, Bond’s refusal of Q’s prolytic digestive enzyme shake order at Madeleine Swann’s retreat is nothing short of hilarious. Bond’s response, followed by his perfectly timed “cut out the middle man” remark, got some of the biggest laughs from my viewing audience, compared to any other Craig era Bond movie.

And I think that was the case because it was kind of unexpected coming after a poorly received meeting with Swann, a serious sync-up with Q and Bond’s imminent departure from the compound. It could have easily been left out, but the writers deserve kudos for showing Craig’s ability to convey dry humor even if it clashes with his stubborn personality in the scene.

It’s a simple joke, but goes to show that Bond’s humor doesn’t always need a big one-liner or elaborate setup to land.
