Bond’s behavior toward Pussy Galore in the Goldfinger barn scene has aged terribly and remains an infamously iconic and uncomfortable Bond moment. Along with the earlier “man talk <butt slap>” scene, it reinforces many of the misogynistic stereotypes that have long followed James Bond and particularly the Sean Connery era of the character. What may once have been framed as charm or masculinity now comes across as arrogance and outright coercion, and Bond’s above quote to seal the deal reflects poorly on the character.
Despite this unseemly legacy, it’s fortunately difficult to imagine a modern Bond movie attempting anything remotely similar today. Cultural standards have changed for the better and Bond’s relationships and power dynamics with women have as well. It’s scenes like this that serve as a time capsule for the attitudes and gender norms of a very different era of filmmaking.
