Live And Let Die (1973)

You’re only my second mission, you know

In Live and Let Die, it remains difficult to understand why Felix Leiter would assign the inexperienced Rosie Carver to assist James Bond in San Monique. Her previous mission had already ended with the death of agent Baines, and it’s quickly established that she lacks the composure and competence expected in the field. Even Rosie herself seems aware of it, openly admitting she would be “completely useless” to Bond after panicking over something as trivial as a dead snake in the hotel bathroom.

What makes their dynamic even stranger is that neither the script nor Bond himself seriously questions her continued presence on the mission, even after her denial of Bond’s advances. A sharper female operative or even a seasoned male ally would have created a far stronger partnership and an undoubtedly more compelling plotline. Rosie Carver was certainly an unusual creative choice, but not an effective one.
