My first and last Idris Elba thoughts

Even during the search to replace Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, I never seriously viewed Idris Elba as a realistic candidate, so I largely avoided the discussion. Now that Elba himself has addressed the speculation over the years having denied he was ever in the running, it feels worth finally giving my perspective.

Elba’s talent and acting bona fides are second to none, having delivered outstanding performances for decades and consistently exhibiting the qualities of a leading man. There was never really any question about that. The elephant in the room about his casting was always his race, and whether the world was ready for a “black Bond.” I don’t think the color of Bond’s skin matters, but it also could not be ignored and would add layers to Bond that the character was never really designed to carry. Straying from the character’s origin story in such a way feels unnecessary, much like having a female Bond would do the same.
