One of the more delightfully baffling details in Goldfinger is the checkpoint guard at the entrance to Goldfinger’s industrial hideout. Instead of a squad of hardened security men, the gate is tended by what appears to be a kindly elderly woman who responds to a car horn to raise the boom gate. Moments later, she reveals herself as a machine gun wielding threat, attempting to stop James Bond’s escape in his Aston Martin DB5. From a practical standpoint, it’s a curious security choice. But really, it’s one of those unique wrinkles in James Bond movie that make it memorable.
I wonder if granny actually lived at the checkpoint? Is she Goldfinger’s mother?!
