This blink-and-you-miss-it line in From Russia with Love raises far more questions than it answers. During Bond’s soft interrogation of Tatiana Romanova about the Lektor, the conversation suddenly veers into eyebrow-raising territory. Bond casually hints at an “interesting experience” with “exciting Western girls” with M in Tokyo, prompting an uncharacteristically flustered reaction from M. Not only does he halt the eavesdropping session, he also asks Moneypenny to leave the otherwise man-filled room, seemingly out of potential embarrassment or inappropriateness of the Tokyo story Bond is about to share. It’s a strange moment, especially given Bernard Lee’s typically buttoned-up portrayal of M as a no-nonsense authority figure.
So in the end, the real question is, what escapades did Bond and M get into in Tokyo? We’ll likely never know…
