A View To A Kill (1985)

St. John Smythe? Sleeping like a baby

Bond’s escape and return sequence at Zorin’s estate in A View To A Kill is both effective and flawed. On one hand, it showcases a clever and methodical ex- and infiltration plan where Bond takes advantage of the looser security realities of the 1980s making such an operation possible. It’s almost nostalgic to see that kind of elusive escape sequence, especially in today’s hyper-monitored world. But on the other hand, Bond’s reliance on a crude too-short snore tape to fool his room’s audio surveillance undermines the plan. And when Bond’s stealth investigation at Zorin’s lab goes awry, it exposes a 007 that shows his age. It’s one of a few faux pas in Roger Moore’s final James Bond outing that signal that, in my opinion, it was time for Moore to retire after the previous movie.
