For Your Eyes Only (1983)

Take the low road! Not that low!

James Bond’s offhand driving advice to Melina Havelock in For Your Eyes Only backfires when their escape through the tight mountain roads ends with their car flipped onto its roof. The moment is comedic, but the chase itself is one of the most cleverly constructed Bond chase scenes, largely because of the inspired choice of vehicle: the Citroën 2CV. At first glance, the modest yellow 2CV seems underpowered and laughably outmatched for a chase. But in this instance, we quickly see it’s memorable for being so simple and inventive.

And simplicity like this will be paramount in the success of future Bond movies, post-Daniel Craig. Like most Bond fans, I’ll be watching every scene and plotline of the movie like a hawk, and nothing is more dissatisfying in a Bond movie than confusion and having more questions than answers after a scene, for whatever reason.
