In From Russia With Love, the train attendant’s urgent question to Bond abruptly shifts the lighthearted “Mr. and Mrs. Somerset” ruse into tragedy, leading to the discovery of Kerim Bey and Benz dead in their compartment, apparently after killing one another. While effective in shock value, the moment feels like a missed opportunity, since we’re never given any real insight into what transpired.
Although there are visible signs of violence suggesting a struggle, nothing is explicitly confirmed. A short confrontation, possibly with Bond arriving just moments too late to intervene, would have given the scene greater emotional impact and narrative clarity. Instead, an important character’s death is left frustratingly vague. Such a bummer!
