Dr. No (1962)

Dr. No exhibits unique Bond movie confidence

As the inaugural entry in the franchise, Dr. No carries a level of confidence unmatched by any other James Bond movie. Much of this assurance stems from Sean Connery’s effortlessly authoritative debut, but it’s also a product of the filmmakers’ freedom to define Bond from the ground up, unburdened by audience expectations or established continuity. Nowhere is this clearer than in the bold, unapologetic use of John Barry’s theme, which is deployed with a prominence and self-belief rarely equaled in other movies.

Dr. No represents a remarkably assured first impression, introducing the character to the world with clarity and conviction. It remains underrated for how definitively it establishes the cinematic Bond as the iconic figure we recognize today. What a debut!
