You Only Live Twice (1967)

Really? Well, I like the plumbing.

In You Only Live Twice, Bond is visibly astonished when he visits Tiger Tanaka’s residence and is treated to a traditional Japanese spa experience attended by several scantily clad women. The aforementioned humorous quip perfectly captures his mix of surprise and delight after Tanaka introduces him to what he calls a “civilized bath.” As Bond enjoys the attentive sponge bath, he and Tanaka discuss both the mission at hand and Bond’s growing appreciation for this refined Japanese custom. The scene is revealing, not only for its playful sexual undertones but also for its implicit commentary on Japanese social order: men first, women second. One can’t help but wonder, whether Japan might be a suitable and decidedly luxurious retirement destination for 007.
