Licence To Kill (1989)

We gave her a nice honeymooooon

Dario’s taunting line in Licence to Kill lands with a strange, almost mocking musicality. The elongated inflection feels deliberately childish and cruel, as if he’s savoring the pain he knows it will inflict on Felix Leiter after Leiter asks the whereabouts of his kidnapped wife. Whether Benicio del Toro was reaching for dark wordplay or simply twisting the line to make it more unnerving, the result is effective.

Dario himself is a fascinating near-miss of a character who, despite his charisma and brutality, seems to fall just shy of the iconic status of the great Bond henchmen. Part of me thinks del Toro should get another crack at the world of Bond. His evolution as an actor since 1989 has been extraordinary, and I like the idea of him returning as a fully realized Bond villain.

Age may complicate a reboot narrative, but in an era where Bond movies are increasingly character-driven, del Toro’s gravitas could easily elevate an entire movie.
