Skyfall (2012)

Oh. Well my name’s Eve. Eve Moneypenny.

Skyfall‘s final sequence and the formal introduction of Moneypenny and the new M ultimately redeem the movie.  After Silva’s death and the disjointed return to Bond’s childhood home, the narrative regains its footing with a moment that feels both deliberate and celebratory.  The revelation of Eve Moneypenny, followed by the symbolic passing of the M mantle from Judi Dench to Ralph Fiennes, provides a sense of renewal that the movie had been searching for in its closing act.

These scenes function as character origin moments, a rarity in any Bond movie, but appropriate given that Craig’s tenure operates as a reboot of the franchise.  The filmmakers use this transition not only to honor the series’ past but also to reestablish its foundations for the future.

I audibly gasped in the theater during the Moneypenny reveal, and the sequence left me with a renewed sense of confidence in the franchise.  It was a smart, satisfying conclusion, one that sent me out of the theater smiling and reminded me why Bond endures.
