With this clipped introduction, Quantum of Solace (2008) presents Agent Strawberry Fields: a character whose full name is never spoken aloud, yet appears plainly in the credits. The omission is puzzling: if the filmmakers were willing to lean into such a conspicuously playful name, one wonders why they resisted even a passing acknowledgement or allowing Bond a signature strawberry-themed quip to highlight it?
Despite the brevity of her screen time, Fields makes an immediate impression, especially when her confident professionalism falters almost instantly under Bond’s advances. There’s an obvious spark in her scenes with Bond where she displays a reluctant attraction that gives them a compelling dynamic. Specifically, in their post-coital moment, her great chemistry with Bond and sex appeal shine through as Bond kisses her back and she despairingly says she’s “angry” at herself for letting the tryst happen.
Unfortunately for everyone, her oil-slicked death (an obvious homage to Jill Masterson’s death of the gold-slicked variety in Goldfinger) feels like a waste.
