For Your Eyes Only (1983)

…and I’ll buy you an ice cream

This almost comically juvenile line from For Your Eyes Only underscores the uncomfortable age gap between Bond and figure skater Bibi Dahl.  The moment lands with cringe precisely because it follows a string of Bibi’s flirtations (each more awkward than the last) yet it also provides a measure of relief.  Bond’s response acknowledges her youth and draws a clear boundary, signaling that he has no genuine romantic interest in her.  In that sense, the line functions as a gentle, even necessary, corrective within a dynamic that could have easily veered into awkward territory.

Their relationship is unlike any other in the Bond canon, and frankly, it’s hard to imagine any other Bond actor attempting this sort of mentor-ward rapport. Moore handles the material with as much grace as the script allows, but the pairing itself seems like a creative writing experiment that never finds its footing.  It’s truly a swing and miss, or actually since this is For Your Eyes Only, a slapshot that hits the post.
