After Kristatos makes this announcement, For Your Eyes Only transitions into one of the franchise’s most quietly gripping sequences: Bond and Melina’s ocean floor descent to recover the ATAC system. It’s a great example of tension buildup and a reminder that suspense in a Bond film doesn’t have to rely on explosions or rapid pacing. Much like the underwater sequences in Thunderball, the scene calmly lulls viewers with the quiet of the ocean but quickly dissipates.
The first-person perspective of the mysterious intruder (albeit encased in an almost absurd bubble-shaped diving suit) adds an eerie and unique cinematographic element that I don’t think is used in any other Bond movie. Melina’s labored gasps for air after her suit is breached evoke genuine desperation, yet the balance of power swiftly shifts when Bond plants an explosive on the diver’s head, sealing his inevitable fate. It’s a relatively quick scene but is very well done!
