Daniel Craig’s remark in Spectre questioning Blofeld’s sanity subtly echoes Sean Connery’s line from Dr. No, in which Bond quips that “asylums are full of people who think they’re Napoleon or God.” Interpreted together, I think they give an accurate and simple insight into megalomaniacal Bond villains. Namely, that madness can conceal itself behind intellect and amplify delusions of grandeur.
That said, the execution of the Spectre meteorite scene left much to be desired. While I appreciate the attempt to pay homage to classic Bond dinner-table confrontations, the heavy-handed symbolism of the meteorite allegory felt overly contrived.
