Time For 007

Saoirse Ronan’s “dark…young female villain” interesting

Actress Saoirse Ronan, coincidentally the wife of rumored James Bond actor finalist Jack Lowden, recently revealed that she is “dead serious” about playing a villain and wants “to go dark.” I appreciate the candor, particularly because she isn’t coyly pretending the timing has nothing to do with her husband’s recent 007 headlines.

A young female Bond villain would certainly be an intriguing prospect, especially given the range of suitably nasty occupations available to her. If Ronan really wants to go dark, I’d steer clear of the usual politician or powerful businesswoman and instead make her the ruthless leader of an international human trafficking organization. It doesn’t get much darker than that, and it would give Bond an especially repugnant adversary without requiring an elaborate geopolitical conspiracy.

The human trafficking world was referenced previously with Sévérine’s backstory in Skyfall as a former sex slave, but it only hinted at a much darker story that the movie never really explored. Putting that subject front and center through a villain like this could make for a compelling storyline, and Ronan would be an intriguing choice for the portrayal.

Valentin Zukovsky always seems to have a quick-witted comment or some way of measuring himself against 007. As their relationship developed across GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough, Zukovsky enjoyed revisiting their history, occasionally with a pointed reminder that their friendship was anything but friendly. He even had no qualms about physically threatening Bond…

Little did we know that in For Your Eyes Only it’d be revealed that our British Secret agent had rock climbing skills?!  I’m surprised Bond didn’t reject Columbo’s climbing proposal from the outset.  No thanks!

Goldfinger’s monologue to his investors showcasing Project Grand Slam, and this quote specifically, has to be his most iconic and underrated.  He gets his most passionate during this speech, and only speaks more fondly of gold.  A true psychopath – makes an awesome villain!
