No Time To Die (2021)

You didn’t get the memo? I’m retired.

Jeffrey Wright’s portrayal of Felix Leiter throughout the Daniel Craig era remains one of my favorite supporting performances. Although I dislike his fate in No Time To Die just as much as Bond’s, their reunion at the Jamaican club is a highlight. Bond’s reluctance to embark on a new mission with Leiter is obvious the moment Leiter approaches him, perfectly captured by the line above.

Even so, it only takes a few drinks and some easy conversation before the old partnership starts feeling natural again. Although Bond ultimately defers (for now), his respect for his brother from Langley is perfectly apparent. Their rapport makes it easy to believe they have shared countless off-screen adventures over the years. And although short, the scene is one of the rare moments in No Time To Die where the movie slows down and simply lets its characters enjoy each other.

It has been a painful five years since the release of No Time To Die, with “source of all of my pain” mainly stemming from both the movie itself and the unprecedented wait for its successor. I genuinely wanted to enjoy Craig’s swan song, but the decision to kill James Bond caused me to leave…

Switching Bond actors shouldn’t be this hard.  The alleged 2028 release date for Bond 26 sucks. Historically, it was 2 years between Connery and Lazenby, 2 again back to Connery.  Two again to Moore.  Two from Moore to Dalton, 6 from Dalton to Brosnan, 4 from Brosnan to Craig. Just an overcomplicated mess…

New Bond 26 writer Steven Knight said the above to describe his ambition in writing the next script.  It’s a tad generic, but his enthusiasm is palpable in a recent BBC News interview. They have to reboot the Bond movies in the 1960s, right?!
