Although I mostly loathe Die Another Day, like any Bond movie, it has some redeeming qualities. No, I would never defend the exoskeleton suit or Bond’s improbable windsurfing escape. But I would endorse Gustav Graves, who carries himself with exactly the kind of flamboyant arrogance that makes for an entertaining and commanding Bond villain. Nothing more than his demeanor, though. The main focus of the “self-publicizing adrenaline junkie” should’ve been his outrageous confidence and his business, not an outlandish DNA swap origin story paired with uncompelling daddy issues. Leaning into his oversized personality would’ve made him a far more memorable Bond villain than any plot twist.
