You Only Live Twice (1967)

Dikko Henderson’s “perfect” stirred, not shaken martini

It’s a shame Dikko Henderson’s time in You Only Live Twice is so brief because he quickly shows to be an entertaining ally. Bond and Henderson get off on the right foot, or rather the right leg, when 007 slaps his prosthetic with a cane to confirm his identity. They develop a good rapport as Henderson shares valuable intelligence about his time in Japan and the identity of Bond’s main contact Tiger Tanaka.

Henderson then clumsily (or purposefully?) mistakes Bond’s famous martini order as stirred instead of shaken. Bond glosses over the mistake, calling the drink “perfect,” which is a little surprising given how specific it’s normally preferred. Perhaps he’s simply focused on the mission and unwilling to waste time correcting a friendly ally, and not as frustrated as he gets in Casino Royale when asked to specify and his response is “do I look like I give a damn?”. Either way, Henderson’s deliberate mistake is a small but memorable line that makes me wish he survived longer to enjoy another drink with 007.
