Voice dubbing in the early James Bond movies was hardly unique to 007, but it remains one of the early movies’ strangest production quirks. Apparently, producers often replaced the voices of international actors to make their performances more accessible to English-speaking audiences. As fascinating as that is, I’d much rather hear the original voices of characters like Honey Ryder, Auric Goldfinger, Sylvia Trench, and Emilio Largo.

Some scenes make the dubbing especially obvious, with the dialogue and lip movements noticeably out of sync. It makes me wonder whether recordings of the original performances still exist. I suspect at least some of those voices would’ve made the characters feel even more authentic than the dubbed versions. I guess we’ll never know…
